After a few years in Brussels, Hanna and Sam started looking for a home on the outskirts, closer to family and nature. They ended up in a terraced house in Tervuren, still just a tram ride away from the city.
Following an extensive renovation — with Sam taking on nearly all the work himself — the house has become a bright, efficient home.While Sam handled the hands-on work, they left the design thinking to KEPER architecten . A smart decision: “We’re really glad we chose to do it this way,” says Hanna. “We tackled a lot ourselves, but could still rely on the experience and ideas of an architect. With a few well-considered changes we’d never have thought of, the layout now works so much better. We made the most of the available space and made smart choices when it came to materials and finishes.”
With a toddler at home and two parents who love to collect, smart storage is a must. A mix of built-in units and freestanding cabinets offers practical solutions.
“The ceiling in the living room is quite high, and we wanted to keep that sense of space while still adding storage,” Hanna explains. “We quickly landed on Kewlox, because you can customise both the size and the layout. It’s perfect for making the most of the space you have.”
Both in the structure and in the interior, there’s a clear mix of old and new, simplicity and personality. Design classics by Alvar Aalto and Vitra are effortlessly combined with Kewlox pieces, DIY cabinets and personal touches. The base was kept neutral — light grey floors, white walls, wooden window frames — but furniture and accessories bring in playful highlights.

They went for a long setup of three identical units. Hanna aligned the dimensions with the kitchen: same height and width, so the cabinet seems to continue just past the dividing wall. A subtle detail, but one that adds calm and balance to the room. At the same time, the combination is wide enough to store vinyl records, board games and more. It’s a fairly compact piece, but it holds a surprising amount.
“We chose a combination of an open shelf and a closed compartment. Our favourite finish? Frost Polar: a neutral white, but with a semi-transparent look that adds a beautiful colour effect.”
